Crop Overview & Recommendations

Overview

Corn requires high nutrient inputs for optimal yield. Nitrogen is critical throughout the season, with peak demand during tasseling and grain filling. Balanced phosphorus and potassium support root development and stress tolerance.

Fertilizer Recommendations

  • Basal application: Apply phosphorus and potassium at planting with starter fertilizer.
  • Nitrogen: Split applications at planting, early growth, and during tasseling/silking stages.
  • Micronutrients: Zinc is often required; boron and manganese may be needed based on soil tests.
  • Side dressing: Apply nitrogen as side dress during rapid growth phase for maximum yield potential.

Application Tips

Apply starter fertilizer at planting to support early root growth. Use side dressing for nitrogen during vegetative growth. Ensure adequate soil moisture for nutrient uptake. Monitor for nutrient deficiencies, especially zinc.

Growth Stages

  1. Germination and emergence
  2. Vegetative growth (V1-V18)
  3. Tasseling and silking
  4. Grain filling and dent stage
  5. Physiological maturity and harvest

Benefits of Proper Nutrition

  • Increased kernel number and size
  • Better stand establishment and uniformity
  • Improved stress tolerance and disease resistance
  • Higher grain yield and quality
